The board members of the ex-job had a meeting last night. I couldn't go, but I've heard what they talked about: who is going to replace the board member who is resigning. My mom (who is VERY qualified to be on the board and who would be very active and actually get things done) had put her name in the running... but they are not even considering her! I am rather angry about this, since of the three people they *are* considering, only one has had anything to do with the cause the ex-job supports, and the one with a connection was actually in tight with the ex-boss! Of course, the three people under consideration are "important" and "well-known" people in our community, and apparently that is what is important to them.

Things like this tend to be more of a political popularity contest than about your expertice in the field. They exspect the people who do the grunt work to know everything about what they are doing, but the managers to know very little. As long as the people who are doing the hireing can both have some sort of control over them, and benifit from the persons social connections then thats all that matters to them. Its kind of like in High School voting on class president. The people who would be truly effective at the job never even get into the running unless they need somebody to do the leg work.

she can find another board to serve on where her expertise might actually be appreciated. there are so many non-profits out there that need good board members!
